A Ritual for your Ancestors

Hello you beautiful soul and welcome to today’s ritual!

It is Samhain and Halloween today, the 31st of October 2021. Traditionally this day was used to celebrate the end of summer, the harvest, the beginning of winter and honouring the ancestors. Interestingly enough, several other cultures also seem to agree that the time around the 31st of October has some magic to it. It is said, that these days have the power to lift the veil between this world and the other wold. Whether this is true or not, for todays ritual, I ask you to step out of your mind and into your heart. Let go of everything you know and let yourself be guided by what you feel and sense.

If you are reading this on any other day, there is no need to wait a whole year to do this ritual. If you feel called to do it – do it! There is no better time than the present moment! You can even make it a regular ritual and release blocked energies over and over again, until you feel an effect. In this case I would suggest you coordinate it with the waning moon phase (going from full moon to new moon). The main thing is: do what feels right for you, whenever it feels right to do it.

Why practice this ritual?

The simple answer to this question is: You would not be here without your ancestors. You have a long lineage of individuals, who’s shoulders you stand upon today. Everyone of them has played a part in your existence, whether you know of them or not. Each one of them has fought internal and/or external struggles to support one generation after the next until you came into this world. So, no matter what they have done, they all acted according to the best of their abilities in that moment in time. And that’s what today is all about. We honour our ancestors for their achievements, their love, care, support and happiness, while freeing ourselves and our family members from the burden of generational challenges. So without further ado, let’s get started.

What you will need:

For part 1:
  • A Pen
  • A sheet of Paper
For part 2:
  • 1x Candle
  • Matches or a lighter
  • A container or a plate that will not catch fire when you to place your burning paper into it/onto it
For Part 3:
  • 1x Fruit, vegetable or snack you enjoy eating

the step-by-Step guide

Before starting this ritual, I suggest you first read the instructions and then let your intuition guide you to what feels best for you.

Part 1: Pen & Paper

The first things we will be using are your pen & paper (See image for more clarity).

  • Draw a stick figure, representing yourself, into the middle of your paper & write your name below it (coloured light blue).
  • Then draw as many of your ancestors as you like, all around you. The number does not matter, it is simply a representation of your family tree (coloured dark green)
  • Next, draw a line from your stick figures belly button, all the way to one of the ancestors’ belly buttons. Repeat this for every ancestor (coloured blue).
  • Lastly, write all the challenges your ancestors might have faced in their lifetime. The ones that you know off and the ones you think they have faced (e.g. war trauma, rape, miscarriages, etc.). You can also include your own struggles or those of family members that are currently alive. Drop it all onto this paper. Take as much time as you like (coloured grey).
Part 2: Candle & Matches/Lighter

When you are done with step number one, light your candle on top of the fireproof surface. Make sure you have enough space for the paper to fall down on.

  • Repeat the following words, before burning your paper:

With the strength of this flame, break the chains of my ancestors, that are holding me back. Let this fire transform darkness into light, hate into love, pain into pleasure, angst into safety, illness into health, worry into serenity and free me form all that does not serve me. With this, I not only free myself but also all my family members, those alive and those no longer in their previous physical form.

  • Place the centre of your paper, where your stick figure mannequin resides, above the flame, and watch the fire illuminate the words and the lines, all the way to your ancestors. Observe what is happening within your body, heart, mind, energy and soul. Maybe you can even see things appearing in the ashes, or in the smoke of the candle. Take as much time as you like, to sit in silence and observe your sensations, observations and thoughts. Whatever comes up, acknowledge it, without judging it and simply let it pass by.
Part 3: Food & Meditation

When you feel ready for the last step, take your chosen food into your hands (if it is something that could melt, place it on a small plate and hold the plate in your hands). Before closing your eyes, read through the following words and try to visualise something similar during your meditation. This is just a guideline, not a strict protocol, so do whatever feels natural for you. (I might release a guided audio meditation for this – subscribe to my newsletter to stay in the loop):

  • Place your hands, with your food, in your lap.
  • Close your eyes (once you finished reading this visualisation)
  • Relax your whole body.
  • Breathe slowly & deeply through your nose, without forcing it.
  • Visualise, how your ancestors are surrounding you from all sides. You feel comforted, safe, protected and loved.
  • You might recognise some of your ancestors faces or they might just seem like friendly ghosts to you
Red – Safte. Grounded. Protected.
  • Once you have a clear image in front of your closed eyes and visualise how one of your ancestors comes up to you.
  • He/she is glowing in a bright ruby red light. He/she reaches out their hand and touches your food. In that moment, you can see how your food is starting to glow in the same red hues of light. You feel a sudden rush of energy flowing through your body. You feel safe, grounded and protected. Take a moment to enjoy these feelings.
  • Your ancestor smiles at you and you smile back at them and thank him/her for their vibrant energy. They step aside, and another one of your ancestors steps up.
Orange – Creativity. Sensuality. Vitality.
  • He/she is glowing in a vibrant orange colour. They reach out their hand and touch your food. Your food is now glowing in both red and orange colours and pulsating with energy. This energy is flowing into your body and the feelings of creativity, vitality and sensuality arise within you. Take a moment to enjoy these sensations.
  • Your ancestor smiles at you and you smile back at them and thank him/her for their vibrant energy. They step aside, and another one of your ancestors steps up.
Yellow – Strength. Self-confidence. Happiness.
  • He/she is shimmering in a bright yellow glow. They reach out their hand and touch your food which now has picked up all three colours and is shimmering in red, orange and yellow hues, like a flame, dancing in the wind. This newly acquired yellow energy is flowing into your body and the feelings of strength, self-confidence and happiness are taking over your body. Take a moment to feel into these feelings.
  • Your ancestor smiles at you and you smile back at them and thank him/her for their vibrant energy. They step aside, and another one of your ancestors steps up.
Green – Self-Love. Love for others. Bliss
  • He/she is shimmering in a deep emerald green light. They reach out their hand and touch your food which soaks in the colour green into the mix of colours. You are starting to feel a warm sensation in your chest area. The feeling of love is spreading throughout your whole body. A deep love for yourself and for everyone around you. You feel as though you have entered a bliss filled space. Take a moment to feel into these feelings.
  • Your ancestor smiles at you and you smile back at them and thank him/her for their vibrant energy. They step aside, and another one of your ancestors steps up.
Light Blue – Speaking your truth. Speaking up for yourself and others.
  • He/she is shimmering in a crystal clear light blue light. They reach out their hand and touch your food which pulls in the colour light blue. Like the turquoise blue oceans on the Bahamas, a gentle wave rolls over you and it feels like it is flushing out your throat area. As if something had been blocking it. Now you suddenly feel free to speak. Free to voice your truth. Free to say what your forefathers and foremothers were not allowed to or able to say. Take a moment to feel into these feelings.
  • Your ancestor smiles at you and you smile back at them and thank him/her for their vibrant energy. They step aside, and another one of your ancestors steps up.
Indigo Blue – See beyond what the eyes can see. Clarity
  • He/she is shimmering in a deep indigo blue. They reach out their hand and touch your food which pulls in the colour indigo, creating a beautiful rainbow of colours within your fruit. You feel a rush of energy moving through your body and feel as though your third eye is opening up. As though you are starting to see beyond what your physical eyes can see. Able to tell a truth from a lie and able to see beyond the masks that people are wearing to hide their true faces. Take a moment to feel into these feelings.
  • Your ancestor smiles at you and you smile back at them and thank him/her for their vibrant energy. They step aside, and another one of your ancestors steps up.
White/Purple – The connection with everyone around you & the universe. Inner Knowing
  • He/she is shimmering in a bright, pure white light, with a hint of purple. They reach out their hand and touch your food which pulls in the colour white, making your food glisten like a diamond, reflecting all the colours from within. You feel a rush of energy moving all the way from your feet to your crown and beyond. It seems as though a connection between you and the whole universe has been (re-)established. You finally feel whole again. Take a moment to revel in these feelings.
  • Your ancestor smiles at you and you smile back at them and thank him/her for their illuminating energy. You look down at your food and see what a beautiful masterpiece it has turned into. You take a bite from it, without opening your eyes, and you feel how all this energy is flowing into your body. All this strength, endurance, love, kindness, joy and health is flowing into every cell in your body. Chew mindfully and slowly, savouring every bite.
  • Try to only eat half of your food and once you feel you are finished, take another deep inhale – breathe in all the love – and exhale – breathe out all that might still be a challenge in your mind. If there is nothing left, simply breathe out and relax.
  • With the next inhale, open your eyes
Part 4: Step into nature

For the last part of this ritual, take the other half of your food with you into nature and place it somewhere you consider beautiful. At the roots of a stunning tree, next to a beautiful flower, let it flow into the stream of a river – wherever it is, share your other half with your ancestors, by giving it back to nature. We are all made up of the elements of the earth. We all come from it and also go back to it – It’s the circle of life and Mother Nature is the truly that – our mother – birthing us all from her elements.
